Same Difference: Subtly Understanding.

Designing not just with purpose but with a sense of responsibility towards the future and its calculated unpredictability.

At the start of this text, Same Difference written by Detlef Mertins, which looks to be an exert from a book, I didn't understand the nature of the peculiar title, nonetheless, it was a captivating read from the start. In my opinion the first page turns a light on in the importance of designing responsibly, briefly comparing works by two great architects, the author opens way to dive a little deeper into Mies van der Rohe's style and consciousness when proposing a space. The text itself reads as a constant balance between opposites as it guides the reader into understanding the subtleties of a masterfully crafted space. It contrast the simple complexity of Mies van der Rohe's designs with that of nature providing written and visual aids to demonstrate how a room becomes a void of endless possibilities. Halfway through the text the reader is shown a picture comparison of seven of Mies's works, in sense of scale and design, the sameness dissipates as the changes in size, reveal the purpose of these rectangular structures. The author makes it known that these structures although similar share very little in common as the architect takes, "site, program, clients, local conditions", and much more into account.
