Second Assignment: Group Critic with Guest. Part 4.5

Last Monday we had what will be the last group critic of our second assignment. On this post I’ll write a quick recap of what happened during it. Going forward we will continue work on our designs while also working on our third and final project of the semester.

Along with the professor we had a special guest judge architect Rafael Inclan. Our review requirements consisted of: one group model, (3 models in total with implements of our solo week progress) and our solo week floor plans, section cuts and graphic narrative. Each student presented and received separate feedback. As I'll be writing about each of my classmates, I'll link to their blogs; I decided to give them each a PeepsⓇ inspired nickname, to protect their identity (in case any of them have undisclosed names on their class blog), also, it's march so the marshmallows are everywhere and finally because, it's more fun that way.

Group: Greenhouse

The firsts to present were group greenhouse. Consisting of Lemonade, Red Velvet, Party Cake and Blueberry peep. Their concept has been one of my favorites from the start, bringing as much nature to their design as possible really resonated with my own aesthetic. Each of them gave an interesting spin to their individual design proposal.

Their model was sectioned off in 5 places, which made it much easier to see all the interesting aspects inside.

The first to talk about their floor plan was Lemonade Peep, she had an interesting narrative approach of compiling a number of different aspects of design and modifying them according to a designated value in a Cartesian coordinate system. The feedback in her design mostly consisted of giving a proper use to empty spaces.

As for Red Velvet's evaluation, she presented a circular narrative combining different designs as it moved towards the center of the circle. In her individual proposal she was advised to open up closed spaces and a third floor terrace that would compliment her garden areas inside.

In keeping with the garden shop idea, Party cake also decided to design  the private place with its own garden space and for more people to inhabit, inching away from the general idea of one or two occupants. He was advised to add a coffee shop space and improve access to one of the rooms.

Blueberry's "pièce de résistance" was her intricate facade design that sought to divide the house between a scaffold/greenhouse architecture mix and the colonial design original to the property. It showcased the main purpose of the business idea while keeping part of the history alive with a twist.

Group: Spa

My group and I were the second to give our presentation. Consisting of Cotton Candy, Strawberry, Fruit Punch and me Regular Marshmallow Peep flavor (because they're my favorite). Our joined ideas ended up giving us more massage rooms and a bigger living space, along with a classroom terrace and hot tub on the third floor.

Our model had removable outer walls and roof that mounted on top of a chipboard floor like a puzzle, ideal for showing off our intricate "wood wall cover" design.

I'll be posting my proposal idea and presentation in a different post (I'll link to it here when uploaded)

Cotton Candy's facade was ultimately used for our group model. Her roof design utilized the wood wall pattern to create interesting shadows in the massage rooms which I thought was a good idea. Her graphic narrative played with different imaginings of that premise.

2. Strawberry Peep

Her solo proposal consisted more of adding than changing things inside, by moving the living area to a third floor the two bellow become completely focused on the business thus becoming more client friendly. Her reviewer proposed adding more water to the lower floor and playing around with the shadows her pattern could create.

Group: Restaurant/Bar

The last group to present their individual idea was the restaurant/bar combo, their reputation as professor approved rule breakers didn't disappoint today as we were treated to a TV studio, casino and bar on top of bars. their team was one short today so members include: Bubblegum Peep, Watermelon Peep and Pumpkin Spice Peep.

Their model was separated by floor elevation and included their signature glass cubes. this model style served as an interesting way to play around with the placement of the glass boxes.

1. Bubblegum Peep

The TV studio idea was, in my opinion, well researched and executed, with plenty of space for camera equipment and sets centered in the rooms. Her idea was still familiar with the previous concept as her business was a recording studio for cooking competitions. She chose to move the living area to the third floor. Our guest judge suggested she incorporate the glass cube idea of their previous work more predominantly in her current design.

2. Watermelon Peep

His new proposal was a casino/lounge bar, both the professor and guest judge thought his design had a mafia movie type of aura, with a design that gave of a sense of exclusivity and elegance, whether it was or not the intention. His graphic narrative consisted of the parts of the design sectioned into modules which then were arranged differently, with the idea to find the best composition for the space.

3. Pumpkin Spice Peep

Lastly, Pumpkin Spice's design consisted in the inclusion of bar areas in every floor, with the idea being too overwhelming, the judges suggested one bar area that tied all previous areas together by using the glass box as a major component that broke through all the levels and created a giant wine and drinks "shelves" that spanned 3 floors.

With that we finished the last group critic of our second assignment and were given the new site of our next project. Spoiler alert: it's a site on a slope divided by a transited road! Interesting things are bound to emerge from such a peculiar challenge.
